Had I won [American Idol, Season 5], I would have not been able to come out as a band, and that’s all I’ve ever wanted to be….~ Chris Daughtry |
We are as lucky as Daughtry is talented: for his fate [plus talent] turned out to make him one of the most successful American Idol contestants of all time.
Accolades/Awards
There’s going to be a flood of opportunities right now but I don’t think I could really talk about them. ~Chris Daughtry
Was the fourth place season five American Idol finalist
2006 [week of June 10] – His “Wanted Dead or Alive” reached #43 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was dubbed Hot Shot Debut of the Week
2006- Within five weeks of release, his band’s debut album had sold more than a million copies [becoming the “fastest-selling debut rock album in Soundscan history]; by the ninth week, the album was #1—at that time making him the best-seller Idol contestant outside of first or second place in the competition
After his season finale performance of “Mystery” [with Live], the song gained popularity: it reached #80 on the Top 100 ITunes chart
2007 [March] – The new departure song on Idol became his song, “Home”—which he also performed for Idol in the season 6 finale
Rumors and Rumblings
Maybe some people thought I was “safe”, so they didn’t really bother to vote for me at all. ~Chris Daughtry
Besides singing, he also sketches and paints
A favorite pastime is reading comic books
Favorite female and male pop artists are Kelly Clarkson and Rob Thomas
Before performances, does push-ups and vocal exercises
Is father to step-daughter Hannah (from his wife’s first marriage) and to adopted son Griffin
The week he was sent home from Idol, Daughtry fans were reportedly calling for a recount: During the week that would see him going home, over 16,000 signatures on one petition were from those who had called in to DialIdol to vote for Daughtry but allegedly got the thank-you-for-voting-for-me message from Katherine McPhee instead of from Chris Daughtry. However, investigations and subsequent reports revealed no issues with the Idol phone system, so the 16k+ complaints were evidently archived along with the other bits of urbania, misinformation, and myths
During Daughtry’s stint on Idol, a CD of his former band, Absent Element (for which he was lead singer and guitarist), made its way over the cyberwaves
Discussed on Idol his male-pattern baldness, explaining it as the reason he shaves his head
After Chris was eliminated from Idol, Fuel’s Abercrombie and Bell invited him to join their band…while they were on “Extra”. Abercrombie spoke directly to Chris/the cameras, saying if Chris wanted to enetertain what they had all discussed before, Fuel would “take it and go…” While Chris at first was reported to have said nothing in response, by the time of his welcome home party he had announced he would be declining the opportunity that could conceivably make him the band’s new lead singer.
Is friends with Bo Bice, who suggested he audition for Idol; and became good friends with Ace Young, sharing everything from similar backgrounds and similar attitudes about family to a BFF reputation as “the Ben Affleck and Matt Damon of the season,” as Seacrest called them, and “Chrisace” or “Chrace”, as fan-followers dubbed the friends.
