Album Music

There’s always been something of a divide between album sales and singles sales. I have always preferred album music, which is commonly less commercial, up to the more mainstream pop-dominated singles charts. This is a sweeping generalization obviously. From as being a teenager, when I first began to collect records, I have in the bank to buy the albums of the artists I like. There aren’t many singles during my collection. Today, singles have three or four tracks in it and therefore are quite expensive. A few of these tracks are fillers and various mixes from the one song. I will only buy a single if I know that I’ll never want to buy the album.

The nature of the way you obtain our music has changed so much. With the coming of Internet downloading, we are able to compile our own albums by choosing the tracks we would like. Traditional album music bought in the record stores may contain tracks we’d rather not have. This really is becoming a lot more influential, as download sales are being included now in record charts. Some songs have become big hits on the strength of the downloads alone, as with UK band, the Arctic Monkees. Will album music, as we’ve always known it, continue to sell? It’s tough to say, as fans take more control over the things they pay attention to. Everyone is their very own DJ, using their iPods glued to their ears.

Albums give performers the chance to experiment in ways they wouldn’t consider when producing a single. They are able to try out different types of music which fans may not be familiar with. Within the 1970s, concept albums were in fashion, with arty gate-fold sleeves and poetic lyrics. It was a far cry in the three-minute single. Lots of artists, then and today, rely on album music sales and do not bother to advertise singles much. Singer songwriters are a good example of this. Artists such as Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Neil Young have made little impact using their single releases. Bands like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Deep Purple could fill big stadiums without good singles success. They shifted tons of albums instead.

I usually look at the album charts first to determine what’s happening. It’s more interesting in my experience than the singles charts, which feature a large amount of one hit wonders and passing trends. One more reason for purchasing albums is to hear a good band captured live. A sustained stereo blast of live rock for forty minutes is what a doctor ordered. Willie Nelson Country Throwdown Tour 2011

Willie Nelson Country Throwdown Tour 2011 is coming to The Mann Center For Performing Arts in Philadelphia on May 27th.

I looked through my personal music collection the other day, and I found that the vast majority of my country CDs were of old time country music artists. Guys like Willie Nelson, George Jones, Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings are among my favorites, and I have found that the more recent country artists just really don’t do it for me.

I think one of the things that most appeals to be about the old time country music is that it told such great stories. Willie Nelson’s “Red Headed Stranger” was an entire album that basically told one continuous story through a series of songs.

I really love the old time country music singers and still listen to them on a regular basis. I really don’t care if people make fun of me for it, because it was how I was raised. I do like some modern country, and I listen to a few of today’s country artists, but for me, the older guys and girls are still the best.

If you plan to attend this concert, make sure to check out all the other interesting Philadelphia attractions for some great fun.
